My experience photographing the CA Reentry Program at San Quentin Prison was truly amazing. I have volunteered for many (and far too few) different types of causes: cancer survivors, small children, retirement homes, and environmental, but I found myself seeing the world from the inside, from a prison.

The perspective I was exposed to is probably the brightest side of the prison system, made possible by amazingly hard workers, coordinators, and dedicated volunteers. Also exposed to me were the downfalls of the justice / prison system itself, which cannot currently be alleviate by the current number of these exceptional programs.

I had the great opportunity to meet and photograph many inmates receiving all sorts of help from the volunteers, including job planning and paperwork, housing paperwork, G.E.D. test information, and more. All the inmates were very appreciative, orderly, and extremely friendly. They really could see the effectiveness this program was in their lives.

I hope that this is more of the norm than the exception, in terms of programs like these, and the motivated and inspired inmates.

Please enjoy the series I've posted, and please respect those photographed as those serving their due time and the volunteers giving their time and efforts to help out those who seek to better their lives.
